Raam dragged me into seeing another movie, although this time I wasn't doubting that the movie would be zetta good, just that it would anything better than zetta average. The beginning of the movie (although the opening credits were very well done) insisted on keeping up this suspicion by being exactly that: average. I liked the writing, but the acting was zetta crappy (something that didn't change throughout the movie). But, somewhere in there, The Watchmen pulled through for me.
Since The Watchmen is based off of a comic book, I get the impression that it's a poorly done movie based off of a zetta awesome comic book. Mind you, not everything about The Watchmen's transition to the silver screen is done poorly, but small details here and there could've been improved on. The writing and story, both of which are so dark they're compelling, are both pretty good, but it's hard not to get the feeling that too much of it is copied from it's source.
Despite some small details, The Watchmen seems like it was born to be made in movie format. I doubt some of the darker scenes would've been as good in the comic book without all the realistic special effects that made the movie look so convincing. Some of the scenes are mildly disturbing, although this isn't academy award material.
In the end, The Watchmen is a pretty good movie, but I just can't shake the feeling that I'm cheating myself by not getting the comic book instead. You'll probably still like the movie if you read the comic book, but I do recommend you get the comic book first.
